What Happens on a Walk

Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, or “Forest Bathing,” a forest therapy walk is specifically designed to help you slow down, drop into your senses and connect to the natural world in a deeply restorative way.

Throughout the walk (not hike—we won’t be going far) I offer a series of invitations that give you the opportunity to cultivate presence, open all your senses, and actively connect with the land. Most walks last about 2.5 hours and end in a tea ceremony featuring a local tea plant and a healthy snack.

 

About Me

I’m Tina Guldhammer Frei, and I'm a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). I’m also a writer, story coach, improv teacher and parent based on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and I've spent my life exploring the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. I’ve experienced firsthand the profound ways in which nature can heal and restore us if we take time to slow down and let it work its magic, and I’m excited to share that magic with you.

The Practice of Forest Therapy

Science continues to uncover the profound ways in which time spent in nature affects us. Our blood pressure and stress levels decrease, our immune response and cognitive functions improve, and our nervous system begins to reset.

More than just a walk in the forest, Forest Therapy engages in core routines that intentionally deepen and cultivate a restorative connection with nature. It’s not just a one-time event, but a practice to return to, knowing that human beings are at their best on every level the more they connect with natural space (it is, after all, our original habitat). 

Forest Therapy is a deeply relational practice. It’s not just about how we benefit from nature, it also leads to an ethic of reciprocity in which we seek to tend the wild spaces around us.

Even if you already spend a ton of time outdoors, it feels different when you’re given permission to slow down and connect with the earth in ways you haven’t before. As a guide, I am here to open doors you might not open for yourself, introduce a variety of nature-connection practices you might not have tried, and hold a safe and pleasant space for you to let go and receive what you need from your time in the forest.
